Watford Football Club: A Storied Legacy

Watford Football Club, founded as Watford Rovers by Henry Grover in 1881, has a rich history. Originally an amateur team playing in Watford, the club changed its name to West Hertfordshire in 1893 and finally settled on Watford FC in 1898. Throughout its history, the club has experienced both triumphs and challenges, cementing its place in English football lore.

A significant chapter in Watford’s history began in the mid-1970s when famous singer Elton John became the club’s president. His financial support and passion for the team led to remarkable achievements. Under the management of Graham Taylor, Watford ascended to the First Division (now the Premier League) in the 1981-82 season, finishing second behind Luton Town.

The team earned a spot in the UEFA Cup and reached the FA Cup final in 1984. Notably, in the 1982-83 season, Watford finished second in the First Division, just behind Liverpool, marking their highest league finish ever. The rivalry with Luton Town, known as the «Beds-Herts Derby,» is one of the most intense in English football. In terms of achievements, Watford has won titles in the Third Division (1968-69, 1997-98) and the Fourth Division (1977-78). They were runners-up in the FA Cup twice, in 1984 and again in 2019.
